چکیده

Abstract Many ant species are known to exhibit foraging tool use, during which ants place various debris items (e.g., pieces of soil, leaves, pine needles, etc.) into liquid food, and then they carry the food-soaked tools back nest. In present study, we compared tool-using behavior in captive colonies two closely related myrmicine with different feeding preferences: Aphaenogaster subterranea , an omnivorous species, Messor structor a mainly granivorous seed-harvester species. We supplied honey-water baits six types objects could use as tools: sand grains, small soil large sponges. found that workers A. both dropped more retrieved these than M. . While preferred smaller over larger ones, preferences for did not differ significantly from random. addition, dropping was faster retrieving began earlier For regularly utilize compete food sources, ability efficiently transport via may be important it is ants. Dropping liquids, however, still useful means supplement diet periods seed shortage also serve getting rid unwanted liquids close

Exocrine chemistry of the myrmicine ant Zacryptocerus pusillus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Minor workers of the ant Zacryptocerus pusillus have unusual exocrine secretions in both their mandibular and Dufour glands. The mandibular glands contain a 3:1 mixture of 4-heptanone and 4-heptanol, a mixture found only in the related species Z. varians. The Dufour gland contains a mixture of 13 aldehydes from C9 to C18, not previously encountered in ant secretions. The venom glands gave varia...

Myrmozercon burwelli sp. nov. is described from arboreal nests of Polyrhachis flavibasis (Formicidae) from rainforests in southeast Queensland, Australia. Myrmozercon beardae sp. nov. is described from unknown ants from South Australia. New specimens with host species data are recorded for Myrmozercon iainkayi Walter, and its protonymph and deutonymph are described. Supplementary notes are prov...

Common names for Australian ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Most insects do not have common names, and this is a significant barrier to public interest in them, and to their study by non-specialists. This holds for even highly familiar insect groups such as ants. Here, I propose common names for all major native Australian ant genera and species-groups, as well as for many of the most abundant and distinctive species. Sixty-two genera, 142 species-group...

Habitat preferences of Strumigenys ants in western Japan (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

The ant tribe Dacetini contains more than 800 species (Bolton et al. 2006). Many dacetine ants are specialized predators on soil inhabiting arthropods such as Collembola, Acarina, and to some extent also Diplura (Brown and Wilson 1959; Masuko 1984, 2009ab; Wilson 1953). Due to their peculiar morphological characteristics related to this specialized predation, dacetine ants have attracted the in...
